Chapter 21

· · · · ·

Tage held out his hands proudly. “I mean it, right at me.”

“I can’t.” Impulse shook his head. “We’re not Surge Knights anymore. We can’t just absorb ignitions. We weren’t in the program long enough to learn that.”

“Maybe, maybe not.” Tage thought of how simple running through the desert had been. How Lumen and Impulse had needed to pause to recharge, but he’d been drawing more energy than he needed in his running steps. “I think I can, guys. And if it works, I’ll be charged.”

“And if not,” Lumen said, “you’ll be severely hurt or dead. Tage, we’re so weak from that stupid powerline. It’s not like you can just bounce back. Remember that Surge Knight at practice with Flux?”

“Yeah,” Tage answered.

“He’s probably dead,” Lumen said.

“You don’t know that,” Impulse said.

“We have to try something,” Tage said. “The reality is we’ll all be dead if I can’t get us out.”

“Tage,” Lumen protested. “You know that isn’t how it works! You don’t get charged up by absorbing an ignition. It just dissipates, like a fart in the wind. And only elite Surge Knights like Charuss can absorb an ignition! It takes years of practice.”

“I can’t explain why,” Tage said, “but something is different inside me. My body is efficient with electricity. It’s almost become innate, or an instinct.”

“Let me try the lock first,” Impulse said. “Where’s the harm in that?”

Tage shook his head.

“Tage,” Impulse said slowly. “I can’t hurt you.”

“You won’t,” Tage assured him. “And they’ll hear your attempt. We have one shot and no time. I know mine has the best chance of working. Hit me with a Current Ignition. I need the shock. Let me absorb your charge, then I’ll blast open my cage with a bolt. It only takes me a few seconds to fully charge, and I’ll blast both of your cages open. At that point, I’m sure they’ll be on us like stink on ursogen poop.” He smirked at Lumen. “Then we either make a run for it or fight. They might be too afraid of us to fight when we escape the cages.”

“Are you sure?” Impulse asked.

“Yes!” Tage pleaded. “Please, hurry, we’re running out of time.” He slipped his hands through the bars and pointed his palms at Impulse.

Impulse stepped to the back of his cage, as if to lessen the blow. He pointed his hands at Tage’s open ones and squeezed his eyes shut. “Please forgive me.”

A bright Current Ignition cut through the evening darkness directly at Tage. Like a rainbow of white light connecting the two boys, Impulse shot the current at Tage until his charge was depleted. Tage’s body sparked and swam with the influx of power. He expected to smell burnt flesh, at least a little, but didn’t.

Suddenly, he arched his back and slammed into the other side of the cage.

“Tage!” Lumen yelled.

“Ah!” Tage screamed.

“No, no!” Impulse shouted.

But it was too late.

Tage thrashed around in the cage, causing it to sway wildly. The chains clanked from all the commotion.
